Striking announcements continue to emerge from Cinema-Con. Most recently, Top Gun 3 was officially announced. The first details about the film, which will once again star Tom Cruise, have been shared.
Top Gun: Maverick, which arrived years after the first film, grossed $1.5 billion at the box office, instantly transforming Top Gun into a much more popular franchise. This made a third film inevitable. Indeed, news from recent months revealed that preparations for Top Gun 3 had begun. The preparation process has continued since then, and Top Gun 3 was officially announced yesterday at Cinema-Con.
Tom Cruise Returns for Top Gun 3
With yesterday's announcement, it became official that Tom Cruise will return in his role as Maverick. Other cast members have not yet been announced, but we can expect to see some of the young actors from Top Gun: Maverick in Top Gun 3. The return of Miles Teller and Glen Powell is considered a certainty.
The new Top Gun film is being prepared by Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote and directed the last four Mission: Impossible films and was part of the screenwriting team for Top Gun: Maverick. Interestingly, yesterday's announcement made no mention of director Joseph Kosinski. After delivering an impressive job on Top Gun: Maverick, Kosinski directed the F1 film and is currently busy with its sequel. He also has other projects in the pipeline. Therefore, it is rumored that McQuarrie might take the director's chair for Top Gun 3 instead of Kosinski. After all, McQuarrie has proven himself behind the camera.
