Why Can't Windows Be Activated Without Internet? Here's Microsoft's Explanation

Microsoft has explained why it removed the official method for activating Windows 11 and 10 without an internet connection. The company believes that online activation is a better method. Here's why:

As of January, Microsoft no longer allows phone activation for Windows 11 and 10, as well as Office software. Users calling to activate Microsoft products encountered an automated message: "Product activation support has moved online. For the fastest and most convenient way to activate your product, please visit our online product activation portal at aka.ms/aoh." Why did Microsoft remove this activation method that had been used for years?

Microsoft: Windows Product Activation Portal Prevents Scams

Microsoft states that the new activation portal makes activating Windows and Office more secure and easier, helping to prevent fraud. When users log into the Microsoft product activation portal, they encounter a captcha system. After passing the security verification, they log in with their Microsoft accounts and initiate the activation process.

Although Microsoft ended the phone activation method for Windows as of December 3, 2025, the company notes that those who activated their products this way can continue to use them without any changes.
