New Option for Canceling Google Play Store Subscriptions

New Option for Canceling Google Play Store Subscriptions

When you try to cancel your subscription via the Google Play Store, a new, dissuasive option will now appear. You will be able to choose between continuing with a more affordable plan or canceling.

Google announced at its I/O event that app developers will soon be able to offer users the option to switch to a lower-priced plan instead of canceling their subscriptions. When you tap the cancel subscription button in the Play Store app, you will now see the option to switch to a more affordable plan alongside "Keep subscription" and "Cancel subscription."

More Affordable Offers to be Presented Upon Subscription Cancellation

A new update to the Play Store infrastructure, announced at the annual Google I/O event, will allow developers to intervene during the cancellation process. Instead of simply allowing you to confirm your decision to cancel, the system will present alternative prompts to encourage you to reconsider your subscription.

The upcoming update is based on a revised in-app Subscription Management API. When you tap the traditional cancel subscription button, the interface will no longer offer only the standard options to keep or terminate your plan. Instead, developers can now directly offer a lower-tier subscription or a cheaper alternative within the same menu.

Google employee Diego Dayan stated, "Soon, our in-app Subscription Management API will allow users to easily change their plans directly within your apps. More importantly, we are bringing this functionality to the cancellation flow. When a user presses the cancel button, you will be able to offer them the option to switch to a lower plan.
