Apple has added three older Mac laptops to its obsolete products list. The company moves aging hardware into this category once sufficient time has passed since it stopped selling them. If you own any of these devices, getting official repairs will now be much more difficult, as the manufacturer typically ceases producing necessary replacement components.
Three Intel-Powered MacBooks Now Only Eligible for Battery Replacement
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
- MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, two Thunderbolt 3 ports)
Apple recently added three more Macs to its obsolete products list. The 2018 Retina MacBook Air, the 13-inch 2018 MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt 3 ports, and the 13-inch 2017 MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt 3 ports are now on the obsolete list.
Apple states that it considers products obsolete when it stopped distributing them for sale more than seven years ago. The company no longer provides hardware service for obsolete products. Service providers also cannot order parts for these products. Mac laptops may be eligible for an extended repair period covering only batteries for up to 10 years from the last date the product was distributed for sale, depending on parts availability. Therefore, if you own one of these three listed Mac computers, you are only entitled to a battery replacement.
The 2018 MacBook Air was the first Air series model with Touch ID and a Retina display. Previous MacBook Air models featured a non-Retina display with much lower resolution and less vibrant colors. 2018 was also a redesign year for the MacBook Air; Apple introduced smaller bezels and a thinner, lighter chassis.
Apple's 2017 MacBook Pro used Intel Kaby Lake processors and brought no innovations other than the processor. The 2018 model came with True Tone display support and a third-generation keyboard with butterfly keys.
