Paramount, having decided to move away from continuing the current Star Trek film series with a fourth movie, has opted instead to produce an entirely new film. To prepare this recently announced new Star Trek movie, the duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were brought on board. The pair, who previously worked together on films such as Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, were announced to both write and direct the new Star Trek film.
New Star Trek to Leave Behind Old Actors and Characters
Working on the new Star Trek film since then, the duo shared the first details about the project this week. As this will be a new series, it was already anticipated that the actors from the previous films would not return. However, Daley and Goldstein will go further, opening a new chapter in terms of characters as well. Unlike the recent films that focused on familiar characters like Captain Kirk and Spock, this new movie will tell a brand-new Star Trek story with entirely new characters and actors.
We will have to wait and see how this decision is received by Star Trek fans. However, it's worth remembering that the most successful Star Trek productions since the original series are precisely those that did just this. Star Trek: The Next Generation is the best example of this.
The duo stated that they will tell a story that unfolds almost in real-time, citing Training Day and Crimson Tide as two films they are using as references. Training Day, memorable for Denzel Washington's brilliant performance, tells the story of a young detective who starts working alongside a corrupt police detective and finds himself in the midst of dark dealings. Crimson Tide, another film starring Denzel Washington, focuses on a young officer who rebels against his commander on a nuclear submarine and takes control. Looking at these examples, we can get a rough idea of the film's story.
