Paramount signed a massive $110 billion deal to acquire Warner Bros., one of Hollywood's biggest studios, but is now facing a serious obstacle in finalizing the agreement.
Since Paramount's owner, the Ellison family, is very close to Israel and the Trump administration, obtaining approval from the Trump administration was extremely easy. The U.S. Department of Justice approved the deal almost before the review process was complete. However, Trump's support only goes so far, as state governments and federal judges have now become involved.
Federal Judge Upholds States' Objection
As you may recall, last week we reported that 12 states, including important ones like California and New York, had moved to block this deal. The states argued that this acquisition would cause significant harm to both the cinema and TV industries and requested a halt to the agreement, stating that the potential issues needed to be better examined. This request was met with a positive response in court. A federal judge in the Oakland district decided to temporarily halt the deal for two weeks.
The judge's statement, finding the objection that the deal would kill competition to be valid, signals that things could become even more difficult for Paramount.
Of course, as we mentioned at the outset, Paramount has a significant advantage in this matter: Trump and Israel. Currently, these two influential power centers in the U.S. want the deal to be completed. This is because the agreement includes not only Warner Bros.' film studio but also major TV channels like HBO, CNN, and TNT. It is believed that both Trump and the Israeli lobby will do everything in their power to ensure these channels come under the control of the Ellisons. Therefore, despite the states' objections, the deal might still be finalized.
However, in such massive deals, even a few months' delay can mean billions of dollars in costs. Additionally, stocks usually suffer from such disruptions. For this reason, even just this postponement decision could cause Paramount a significant headache.
